Can I change my domain name after registration

Are you willing to know If you can change your domain name after registration?

As per ICANN rules, when a domain name is registered, it can’t be changed, modified, or edited. However, you can delete your domain or turn off auto-renewal if you registered a domain with the wrong spelling or in any other scenario.

Then it is recommended to register a new domain name to replace the current one in your web hosting control panel.

Now let’s look at why it is unchangeable.

Why Are Domain Names Unchangeable?

Because every domain name is unique and an element of the domain name system that is stored on a web server, ICANN forbids the editing of any domain name. To preserve the domain’s uniformity, a domain name cannot be changed.

It’s like you are purchasing a particular digital product, and if you want a different product, you have to make a new purchase (the exchange facility is not there). And most of the time, the cost of your domain name is neither refundable nor transferable.

Can I Get A Refund After Domain Registration?

ICANN charges a fixed fee of $0.18 when a domain is registered, transferred, or renewed. So it makes sense that there is a cost associated with the domain name; that’s why domain registrars don’t offer any refunds for it.

However, you can cancel your domain and get a refund when you’re in Google Domains and initiate your refund request within 5 days of purchase. Manually renewed domain names are not eligible for refunds, but if a domain name is automatically renewed and you do not wish to renew it, you have 30 days to request a refund.

Note:

Not only Google but also many domain providers offer a certain amount of time to cancel your purchase. Which can be refunded or non-refundable within 1 to 60 days. Especially when you register your domain for free with an annual web hosting plan.

Can I Delete My Domain Names After Registration?

Yes, you can delete your domain names through your domain registrar using your registered e-mail verification method. But remember that, not every domain provider offers a domain removal option from their domain control panel.

For example, porkub.com does where Namecheap does not. However, instead of the domain deletion, Namecheap and some other providers offer to delete the entire account permanently.

The best way to do that is to turn auto-renew OFF so that your domain will not be charged again and can be removed automatically after its expiration.

Can I Change My Domain Provider to Somewhere Else After Registration?

You can transfer your domain name from one domain hosting provider to another. But you have to wait at least 60 days from the purchase date of the domain before transferring it to a new provider.

However, you don’t have to wait for 60 days to move your domain to the same domain registrar. Like, when you want to move a domain from one Namecheap to another Namecheap, then it takes some moments to initiate the domain transfer process.

Conclusion:

Make sure your domain name is meaningful, brandable, and word-perfect. You have to make sure that the spelling of your domain is correct before it is registered to prevent the domain name from being changed or any other unwanted situation.

I hope you got your answer for why a domain name is unchangeable.
